Teen Success Story

Alexia Singletary and CLC studentTeens Tutoring with Technology

“I learned a lot of things that helped me understand the way we learn and the effects of barriers to study. During the process, I also created a bond with Jada, my student, and I didn’t expect that at all. I feel that I helped Jada with phonics and basics that she needed help with. I hope that she continues to use the skills that she has learned. This program has opened my eyes about teacher-student relationships and I am happy that I’ve had the once in a lifetime opportunity of helping someone else reach their academic goals. I’m just sad that it has to end because I’m going to miss Jada a lot. But this program taught me something I will use forever and that’s improving my communication skills.”

Teen Success Story

Sherrod Robinson tutoring sister -smallerTeens Tutoring with Technology Program Success

“My time as a tutor was a blast!  I learned the barriers to learning and the huge problem of the misunderstood word.  Not understanding a word can throw off your whole train of thought.  This program also helped me confront situations in a different, more acceptable manner while in training.  I was introduced to new words, the basics of learning and the power of vocabulary.  Most of the time I was also being tutored myself in math which helped me in school.  I’m in love with words and my vocabulary has increased.  Me being a teen raised in a rough place (South St. Pete), I never thought I’d have as much knowledge as I do now, and me being a tutor knocked that thought to the side.”

Target helps CLC in the fight against illiteracy!

Target Cert of Appreciation -croppedTarget sponsors Books for Kids events

Target Corporation was recently acknowledged by the Community Learning Center for sponsoring our Free Books for Kids events during the 2012-2013 school year. Target gave the CLC a grant for $2,000 that allowed us to promote this event to six local elementary schools and to provide snacks and beverages for our children and families.

These events give us an opportunity to distribute hundreds of gently-used books to local children in order to encourage them to read. The children are also able to do arts and crafts, spend time on the playground and enjoy a book reading or storytelling by a local children’s book author.

Thank you to Target Corporation for your generosity and for helping to increase literacy among our local kids!
