CLC’s Butterfly Garden Has New Life

The butterfly garden is exploding with life at Community Learning Center!  Below are just a few pictures we took of the little (and not so little) guys.

Here are some fun facts about butterflies:

  • Eastern monarchs overwinter in Central Mexico
  • Females lay between 300 and 500 eggs.
  • It takes about two weeks for a monarch to hatch from its cocoon to complete its transformation to a butterfly!
  • Monarch butterflies that hatch in the late summer or early fall head for warmer weather.  Ours head for Central Mexico!
  • Monarch butterflies will drink nectar from flowers, including milkweed.
  • Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed.
  • The caterpillars eat for about 2 weeks before turning into a cocoon!
  • The generation of monarchs that migrate live for several months so that they can make the journey back.
  • There are four generations of monarchs born each year.
  • They live for about 6 to 8 months.

Grades improved and self-confidence went up – Success Story!

“I, D.R., the mother of T., am very pleased to write this success story. T. started math tutoring at Community Learning Center around the end of the fall quarter in 7th grade. She is very lucky to have Ms. Sioux as her math tutor. T. was getting average grades when she started. After she started her tutoring with Ms. Sioux, not only her grades improved but her self-confidence went up. She is now more and more interested in learning math and English. Now, she is in 8th grade and she is taking 9th grade Algebra and 9th grade English.”

“I am very happy and I highly recommend Community Learning Center tutoring. I am very thankful to the entire staff and heartily appreciate all the support and assistance from Ms. Sioux.” –D.R. (mother of 8th grade student)

G.E.D. Math Tutoring Success

“My name is A.R. and I am a 38-year-old male. I came to Sioux (CLC tutor) for help in math a few months ago because I was trying to obtain my G.E.D. I am so happy because I got my G.E.D. and I have to give a lot of the credit to Sioux for helping me and showing me the best way to solve and look at math problems. I would recommend anyone to her. Thank you Sioux.” -A.R. (G.E.D. student) *A.R. pictured with his math tutor Sioux

Innisbrook Golf Tournament a Huge Success!

On November 2nd, we hosted our 7th annual Innisbrook Golf Tournament fundraiser. We reached HIGHEST EVER number of golfers (88 this year!) and funds made on this event totaled over $40,000!

Special thanks to the amazing Gary and Peggy Patrick and Ferdi Haag! They executed a wonderful event to benefit our students. Gary and Ferdi coordinated the golf tournament, including recruiting donors and players, working with Innisbrook, managing the golf teams and making sure every detail was attended to. Peggy handled the awards, go-home bags, lunch, tee signs and many other details that made the event spectacular!

Gary Patrick and Ferdi Haag of Hotel Internet Services PostcardMania’s Joy Gendusa and her Executive Assistant Teresa Boettner, and Coni Haag of HammerHaag Steel recruited all of the sponsors and really made this event a fundraising success! Thank you for all of your hard work – we really appreciate you! Shout out to Consumer Energy Solutions’ Owner Pat Clouden and his amazing executives, Kathy Wach and Lynn Posyton. Also, thanks to Jeannine Hall (also of CES) for volunteering to photograph the course, golfers, luncheon and raffle. CES was an event sponsor and Kathy, Lynn and Jeannine volunteered at the event. Kathy and Lynn helped coordinate donations of snacks and coffee and helped promote the event and raffle.

A big thank you to Marnie Trainor for your help getting extra raffle prizes donated!

We are thankful for all of the sponsors, volunteers and event participants. Each and every one of you contributed in a big way. Community Learning Center has serviced 211 local children in our tutoring and homework help programs so far in 2019! This is thanks to the love and support of ALL OF YOU!

This fundraiser makes it possible for CLC to offer reduced-cost math tutoring, reading tutoring, writing tutoring, homework help and SAT/ACT test prep. Call us at (727) 441-4444 for more information or to schedule a Free Reading or Math Assessment.

Middle School Student Success!

“When I first came to Community Learning Center, I didn’t know how to read and I didn’t know how to do math. Now, I know how to do division! Now, I can read fluently! Now, I understand a lot more! When I first came to CLC, I couldn’t speak very much English. Sharon (CLC tutor) did English as a Second Language tutoring with me and now I know how to speak English really well. I talk a lot better!” –A. (6th grade student)

Math Tutoring a Success!

“I’ve used the Community Learning Center’s tutoring program for my daughter who had been struggling with certain subjects in school. She was able to get personalized attention in math and science where she was having the hardest time. The tutor (Debbie) is very patient and really made sure my daughter got the concepts of what she was studying and could use the information. My daughter’s grades went from D’s and C’s to A’s and B’s. She was much happier and looked forward to her tutoring each week. CLC was also flexible and allowed me to use a Saturday morning slot for tutoring since I couldn’t fit it into my schedule during the week.”

“This is a really great place whose focus is on improving education so kids really understand and can apply what they’ve learned, which I often find is sorely lacking in regular schooling.” –G.L. (mother of 5th grade student)

Innisbrook Resort

Located at 36750 Us Highway 19 N in Palm, Harbor, Fla. is Innisbrook, A Salamander Golf and Spa Resort. Innisbrook is home to not one, not two but four championship courses all in one location. These four courses were each designed by architect Lawrence Packard – including the top-rated Copperhead course, which welcomes the world’s finest players each March when the PGA TOUR visits Innisbrook for the Transitions Championship.

The Course

  • The CLC Benefit will be held on the South Course
  • Par 71 • 6,620 yards
  • At over 6,600 yards, South is reminiscent of a links-style design, both in terms of rolling terrain and numerous fairway bunkering. Ample waste bunkers, a total of 10 water hazards, undulating terrain, and the Gulf of Mexico breezes all combine to make South another great Innisbrook challenge that’s become a favorite of our returning guests and event planners.

Mystery Week at Summer Camp!

We’ve had a great summer and Mystery Week was the perfect way to end it!  This week was filled with activities galore!  The CLC Campers were kept in mystery until they showed up at camp each day, ready for any adventure!

They went bowling, to the park, swimming, miniature golfing, had water balloon fights and spent the day at Glaser Children’s Museum in Tampa.

We hope you had as much fun this summer as we did! Have a great school year!

All the Best,

Community Learning Center Staff

Adult Student Wins Big Learning the Origin of Math Terminology!

“After years of being thrown terms such as percentage and decimal, someone (CLC tutor Sioux) finally broke down their meanings and origins to me. Learning that ‘dec’ was based on every tenth, and ‘cent’ was based on every hundredth as their Latin meaning, was very interesting.

Also, learning all the different ways to write a fraction just to find out they’d all come to the same conclusion makes me wonder why we can’t decide to just use one of the ways to write them. Either way, very interesting and I do look forward to finding more meanings behind all these words and numbers.”

– K.A. (adult student)
